This is PFU's flagship HHKB. It arrived in December 2019 with the Classic and the plain Hybrid, and it was the first HHKB to work over both Bluetooth and a USB-C cable. Bluetooth pairs up to four devices and runs on two AA batteries. The Type-S part is the quiet switch. Its sliders carry silencing rings that soften the upstroke, an idea PFU borrowed from Realforce's silent boards back in 2011. You get the classic 60-key HHKB layout with Control beside A, PBT keycaps in white or charcoal, printed or blank, and a Keymap Tool that writes your layout into the board itself. A Japanese-layout version exists with arrow keys, so check which one you're looking at.

Versions
The Type-S has silencing rings on modified sliders and a 3.8mm stroke, against 4.0mm on the plain Hybrid, and the two look the same in photos. Read the code on the bottom label. PD-KB800BS is charcoal and PD-KB800WS white, an N before the S means blank keycaps (PD-KB800BNS), and 820 instead of 800 is the Japanese layout. PFU has also sold a bright-white 25th anniversary edition in 2021, a Snow color, and a limited 30g edition for the 30th anniversary in 2026. Don't confuse it with the wired Classic Type-S of 2025.
Topre switches are rated for 50 million keystrokes, so worn-out switches are rare and spills or sticky keys are the usual trouble. A board that's been opened and modded may have lost its stock silencing rings, which changes the sound. Batteries left in the AA compartment can leak and corrode the contacts.
New to used keyboards? How to check a used keyboard covers chatter, stabilizers, keycap shine and the rest in detail.
Buying guide
We'd buy a Type-S titled with its code, and $237 delivered gets a PD-KB800BS, the charcoal US-layout board, just under the $240–330 band most of them ask. There are at least 128 listed, mostly from Japan dealers, while the few US sellers ask $197–281 delivered. Codes with 820 in them, like the PD-KB820WS here, are the Japanese layout, with a short space bar, arrow keys and Japanese legends, so a US buyer wants 800. The plain Hybrid looks identical, so ask for the bottom label with an S on the end, and a photo of the AA battery bay with the cover off, since batteries left in can leak and corrode the contacts. Skip the 30th Anniversary 30g edition at $671 delivered, a JIS board at about 2.4 times the $276 median.
$197.13est. delivered
The lowest-priced Type-S here at $197 delivered, from a US seller. The title gives no code or layout, so ask for the bottom label, which should read PD-KB800 with an S on the end.
