The Classic is the plainest current HHKB and the direct successor to the Professional 2. It came out in December 2019 with the same new case as the Hybrid, but it's USB-C only, needs no batteries, and drops the old Pro 2's built-in USB hub. Setup is all DIP switches on the back, which swap Delete for Backspace, change the Alt and Meta keys and pick a Mac or Windows mode. Inside are standard 45g Topre switches with the full 4.0mm stroke, so it sounds like a classic Topre board. The keycaps are PBT, printed or blank, in white or charcoal. In 2025 PFU added a Classic Type-S with silenced switches and center-printed keys, and its listings show up here too. For a one-computer desk it's the simplest way into a modern HHKB.

Versions
The Classic of 2019 (PD-KB401B, W, BN or WN) has standard 45g Topre switches, a 4.0mm stroke and DIP switches only, with no remapping software. In October 2025 PFU added the Classic Type-S (PD-KB401BSC, WSC or YSC for Snow), which has the quieter Type-S switches, center-printed keycaps and Keymap Tool support. The Japanese layout comes only in the Type-S. The Classic replaced the Professional 2 and dropped its two-port USB hub.
There's little to go wrong here, with no battery and no radio, and Topre switches are rated for 50 million keystrokes. Spills and sticky keys are the usual trouble, and the USB-C port takes the wear if the cable's been yanked.

Buying guide
We'd buy the PD-KB401B, the charcoal Classic with printed keys, at $167 delivered from a US seller, far under the $240–410 band. There are at least 52 listed, and Japan dealers' new boards set most of that band, while US sellers ask $161–231 delivered for used and open-box boards. The Classic Type-S, with codes ending in SC, shares this page and asks more, about $409 delivered for the English one here, for quieter switches and Keymap Tool support. Ask for a photo of the bottom label, PD-KB401 with no SC for the plain 45g Classic, and a typing test with every key pressed. Skip the $317 charcoal board from a zero-feedback account, whose title copies a $200 listing and whose photo shows AA batteries, which a Classic doesn't use.

The lowest delivered Classic at $161, an open-box charcoal board from a US seller. The title gives no code, so ask for the bottom label, which should read PD-KB401B.

Titled with its code, PD-KB401B, the charcoal Classic with printed legends, at $167 delivered from a US seller. The title doesn't name the USB-C cable, so ask, or budget for one.
