A 40% board drops the number row as well as the function row, the arrows and the numpad, leaving about 45 to 50 keys. Numbers and symbols live on layers you reach with one or more Fn keys. Deskthority notes that many are community designs and often run QMK. It suits people who want the smallest board and don't mind learning layers. On a used one, ask what the layers are set to, since an owner's custom keymap can make it hard to type at first.
