The Professional 2 ran from March 2006 to December 2019, longer than any other HHKB, and it's the board that made the name. It kept the Topre switches the first Professional brought in 2003 and added a two-port USB hub on the back for a mouse or a flash drive. It plugs in with a detachable Mini-USB cable, so you'll want a Mini-USB to USB-C cable for a modern laptop. Settings live on DIP switches. The keycaps are dye-sublimated PBT, apart from the space bar, which was ABS on every Professional until the Hybrid generation. PFU added a silenced Type-S in 2011, in white only.

Versions
The Pro 2 came in charcoal or white, printed or blank (PD-KB400B, W, BN, WN). The Type-S of 2011 (PD-KB400WS and WNS) was white only and added silencing rings modeled on Realforce's silent boards. The Professional JP (PD-KB420, 2008) has a Japanese layout with arrow keys and no USB hub. The Professional BT of 2016 (PD-KB600) looks close but works over Bluetooth only, and the first Professional of 2003 (PD-KB300) is the generation before.
The ABS space bar goes shiny long before the PBT keys do, and some boards have had their keycaps replaced. The Mini-USB port is the weak point on a board this old, and the hub only supplies up to 100mA per port, so it won't run hungry devices.
New to used keyboards? How to check a used keyboard covers chatter, stabilizers, keycap shine and the rest in detail.
Buying guide
We'd buy the PD-KB400B titled used and tested at $184 delivered with free shipping, under the $190–290 band. There are at least 81 listed, all from Japan dealers with no stock US board among them, and most charcoal PD-KB400Bs ask $168–224 delivered, while an N in the code means blank keycaps and WS or WNS is the quieter white Type-S, which asks more. It plugs in by Mini-USB, so pick one titled with the cable or budget for a Mini-USB to USB-C cable, and ask for a typing test, a photo of the bottom label and a mouse working through the two-port hub. The keys are PBT but the space bar is ABS and goes shiny first, and white cases can yellow, as the PD-KB400W here shows in its photo. Skip the $596 PD-KB400BN, about 2.6 times the $228 median for a common blank board.
