The Studio is the HHKB that broke the rules. PFU America in California came up with the idea, Huge Design styled it, and it went on sale in Japan on October 25, 2023. It keeps the HHKB layout but adds a pointing stick in the middle of the keys, three mouse buttons below the space bar, and four touch-sensitive gesture pads on the sides and front for scrolling and switching windows. It's also the first HHKB with mechanical switches, and they aren't Topre. PFU fitted its own 45g silent linear switches and made the board hot-swap for standard MX-style 3-pin and 5-pin switches from Cherry, Gateron and Kailh. It connects by USB-C or Bluetooth, runs on four AA batteries, which PFU chose so the keyboard can last a lifetime like Wada's saddle, and stores four layouts on the board. It won a Good Design Award in 2024.

Versions
The Studio launched in charcoal in October 2023 as PD-ID100B (English) and PD-ID120B (Japanese), and a white Snow version followed in October 2024. Its keycaps don't fit the HHKB Professional boards, and Professional keycaps don't fit it. It isn't a Topre board, so don't expect it to feel like a Hybrid.
Early units shipped with the wrong firmware, which blocked updates until PFU released Keymap Tool 1.0.1 in November 2023. Because it's hot-swap, a used one may have someone else's switches in it, and PFU warns that switches swapped in around G, B and H can hit the pointing stick.

Buying guide
We'd buy a PD-ID100B, the English-layout Studio, titled tested, and $340 delivered gets one from a Japan dealer, well under the $420–550 band most ask. There are at least 53 listed, all but one from Japan with up to $183 shipping and no US seller among them, and PD-ID120B or a title saying Japanese means the JIS layout, with a short space bar and Japanese legends. The Studio is hot-swap, so ask whether PFU's stock 45g silent linear switches are still fitted, and ask for a video of the pointing stick, all three mouse buttons and the four gesture pads working. A photo of the AA battery bay with the cover off should show clean contacts. The German board titled with faulty Bluetooth is a $200 project for someone happy on USB, and the $1,105 Sumi board asks about 2.4 times the $469 median.
