The K4 squeezes 100 keys, number pad included, into a 96% layout, which makes it about 6 cm narrower than Keychron's full-size K10. Version 1 came with Gateron or LK optical switches. Version 2 followed in 2020 with a Broadcom Bluetooth 5.1 chip, an inclined bottom frame, a caps lock light and a relocated Delete key, plus soldered or hot-swappable Gateron G Pro switches. Every version pairs with three devices, has a USB-C wired mode and runs on a 4000 mAh battery Keychron rates at up to 240 hours with the lights off. Mac and Windows keycaps come in the box, though Keychron notes Num Lock only works on Windows. Stock caps are ABS, and cases are plastic or plastic with an aluminum frame. Version 3 arrived in 2025 with QMK, Bluetooth 5.2, Keychron Super switches and PBT keycaps. The K4 Pro, Max and HE are separate keyboards.

Which Keychron K4 is it?
Version 1 was sold with Gateron or LK optical switches. Version 2 brought a Broadcom Bluetooth 5.1 chip, an inclined frame, a caps lock light and a moved Delete key, with soldered or hot-swappable Gateron G Pro switches in plastic or aluminum frames, plus UK, German and Nordic ISO versions. Version 3 (2025) adds QMK, Bluetooth 5.2, Keychron Super switches and double-shot PBT keycaps. The K4 Pro, K4 Max, K4 HE and K4 Ultra 8K are different boards.
What to check
The ABS keycaps go shiny with use. An LK optical K4 won't take MX switches, and each switch type has its own firmware, so a board flashed with the wrong file may not work at all.
01Version: Ask the seller which version it is. Version 2 has a caps lock light and Version 3 is the only one with QMK.
02Switch type: Ask the seller to pull one keycap and photograph the switch. The listing should match it, Gateron mechanical or LK optical.
03Hot-swap: Ask for a photo of one switch lifted out with a puller. A hot-swap K4 lets go easily, and a soldered one doesn't.
04Numpad: Ask for a typing test video at keyboardtester.com or similar, numpad included. Every key should register once per press.
05Battery: Ask how many days a charge lasts with the backlight off. Keychron rates a new K4 at up to 240 hours, so a day or two means a worn battery.
06Keycaps: Look at the most-used keys in the photos under light. Some shine is normal on ABS, and a fresh set fixes it.

Buying guide
Which one to buy
§ Oct 14, 2026
We'd buy the K4B1 titled tested and working with Red switches at $51 delivered from a 100% seller, under the $75 median, though it wears aftermarket caps, so ask whether the stock set comes too. There are at least 73 for sale; complete used boards from US and Canadian sellers ask $41–90 delivered, open-box and new cards about $81–84, and Japan dealers $185–280. The K4 came soldered or hot-swap and with Gateron or LK optical switches, so believe hot-swap only when the title says it and ask for a photo of one switch with its cap off. Only Version 3 has QMK and PBT caps, so trust a version only from the title or the box, and ask for a keyboardtester.com video with the numpad and how many days a charge lasts with the backlight off. Skip the zero-feedback seller shipping from Israel.

Keychron K4 (K4B1) Mechanical Keyboard (Used) Tested Working. Red Switches
Titled tested, a K4C1 with an aluminum frame and Red switches, shown lit, at $73 delivered from a 100% seller. It's mid-band, so it's the one for paying a little more and asking fewer questions; still ask how long a charge lasts.
