The K8 is the tenkeyless board in Keychron's original K-series, on sale from 2020. It keeps the function row and the navigation cluster, drops the numpad, and brings the K2's wireless setup to a full TKL layout, with Bluetooth 5.1 to three devices, a USB-C wired mode, a 4000 mAh battery and keycaps for both Mac and Windows. Switch options ran wide. You'll find soldered Gateron G Pro boards, hot-swap mechanical boards with Gateron or Keychron Super switches, and hot-swap optical boards with Gateron Optical or Keychron Optical switches, which take only optical replacements. Stock keycaps are double-shot ABS, and the case is plastic or plastic with an aluminum frame. Keychron also made it in UK, German and Nordic ISO and in Japanese JIS, and the K8 is one of three Keychrons it lists as certified for Japan. Version 2 arrived in late 2024 with QMK, Bluetooth 5.2 and PBT keycaps.

Which Keychron K8 is it?
The original K8 came with soldered Gateron G Pro switches, as a hot-swap board with Gateron or Keychron Super mechanical switches that takes most 3- and 5-pin MX switches, and as a hot-swap optical board with Gateron Optical or Keychron Optical switches that takes only optical switches. Non-backlit boards used Keychron's own switches. Each has its own firmware file. ISO (UK, German, Nordic) and Japanese JIS versions exist. Version 2 (late 2024) adds QMK, Bluetooth 5.2 and PBT keycaps. The K8 Pro, K8 Max and K8 HE are different boards.
What to check
The ABS keycaps go shiny with use. Optical and mechanical K8s look alike but take different switches and different firmware, and Keychron warns that flashing the wrong file can break the board.
01Switch type: Ask the seller to pull one keycap and photograph the switch from above. The listing should match it, mechanical Gateron, Keychron Super, or an optical switch.
02Hot-swap: Ask for a photo of one switch lifted out with a puller. On a hot-swap K8 it comes out freely, while soldered switches stay put.
03Version: Ask whether it's the original K8 or Version 2. Only Version 2 has QMK and PBT keycaps.
04Battery: Ask how many days a charge lasts with the backlight off. Keychron rates a new K8 at up to 240 hours, so a day or two means a worn battery.
05Stabilizers: Ask for a video of the space bar, Enter, Backspace and Shift being pressed. They should sound even, with no rattle.
06Chatter: Ask for a typing test video at keyboardtester.com or similar. Every key should register once per press.

Which one to buy
§ Oct 14, 2026
We'd buy the K8 titled hot-swappable at $40 with free shipping from a 100% seller, because a hot-swap board turns a chattering switch into a one-minute fix. There are at least 80 for sale and most ask $50–100 delivered, with US used boards mostly at $36–65 and Japan dealers at $142–190, some of them JIS boards with Japanese legends. K8s came soldered, hot-swap mechanical, and hot-swap optical that takes only optical switches, so ask for a photo of one switch pulled to see which you're getting. Ask how many days a charge lasts with the backlight off (Keychron rates it up to 240 hours), for a keyboardtester.com video with every key, and for a look at the space bar under light, since the ABS caps go shiny. Skip the $37 listing whose photo shows a K3 box, and bid on the auction only up to about $40, where fixed-price boards start.
