Realforce boards come from Topre, the company that makes the switches, and the R3 went on sale on November 1, 2021. It was the first Realforce generation with Bluetooth. You can pair it with several computers and swap with a key combination, and when it's plugged in by USB it switches to USB power and stops using its two AA batteries. Every key has APC, Topre's actuation point changer, which sets the depth a key registers at 0.8, 1.5, 2.2 or 3.0mm, saved on the keyboard. The R3s sold in the US have silent switches in 45g or 30g. Japanese models also offered variable weighting, with lighter keys under the little fingers, the trick the first Realforce used in 2001. Keycaps are dye-sublimated PBT, and Mac versions have a silver top.

Versions
US full-size R3 codes start R3HB, and the R3 Mac versions with a silver top start R3HF. R3HB11 is black with 45g keys, R3HB13 black with 30g, and R3HB21 white with 45g. In Japan the R3 also came with variable weighting and a Japanese layout. The R3S of 2022 is a separate wired-only model with a fixed USB-A cable and laser-printed keys, and it's left off this page. Topre switches are rated for tens of millions of keystrokes, so key wear is rare. Spills, AA batteries left to leak, and someone else's APC settings are the likely problems, and a board left at 0.8mm registers at the lightest touch.

We'd buy the open-box R3HB11, the black 45g US-layout board, at $257 delivered from a US seller, well under the $320–430 band. There are at least 34 listed, and nearly all ship from Japan dealers with $35–132 shipping baked into that band, and this open-box board is the only one here shipping from the US. R3HB codes are the US layout (11 black 45g, 13 black 30g, 21 white 45g), while R3HA and other Japanese codes are JIS, with a short space bar, extra keys and Japanese legends. Ask for a photo of the AA battery bay with the cover off and a video tapping the space bar, Enter and both Shifts for rattle, and check the APC setting in REALFORCE CONNECT on arrival, since a past owner may have changed it. Skip the $701 R3HB21, about twice the $354 median, whose photo is the same one a 94.7% seller is using.
