The R2 was Topre's second Realforce generation, launched on October 6, 2017. It kept the switch design the first Realforce brought in 2001 but changed nearly everything around it, with a new case, full n-key rollover, faster response, the APC actuation-depth setting on some models, and silent switches as an option. One fix matters to fast typists. The old R1 needed a key held for at least 31 milliseconds to register, so very quick, sharp strokes could be missed, and the R2 changed the control method to stop that. US dealers sold it with 55g or variable weighting, plus limited silent editions, and with dye-sublimated PBT keys. The cable is fixed, with a channel underneath to route it out the left, right or middle.
R2 boards were sold in several weights. US dealers listed 55g, variable and a silent 45g limited edition, and some R2 models had APC. The R2 RGB is the odd one out, with backlighting and Topre switches fitted with adapters that take Cherry MX keycaps. The older R1 boards lack full n-key rollover. The R3 replaced the R2 in 2021.
What to check
Topre switches are long-lived, so the fixed cable is the weak point if it's been kinked or chewed. Spills and sticky keys are the other common trouble, and you can't swap the cable out like you can on an R3.
01Weight: Ask the seller which weight it is, or for a photo of the label. A 55g board feels noticeably firmer than a 45g or variable one.
02Cable: Look along the whole cable in the photos. It should have no kinks, cuts or tape, since it isn't removable.
03Chatter: Ask for a typing test at keyboardtester.com or similar. Every key should register once per press.
04Stabilizers: Ask for a video tapping the space bar, Enter, Backspace and Shifts. They should feel even with no loud rattle.
05Keycaps: Check the legends in the photos. Dye-sublimated PBT legends should be crisp and the keys matte.

Buying guide
Which one to buy
§ Oct 14, 2026
We'd buy the PFU Limited Edition R2SA-US4-BK, a black US-layout board with silent 45g keys, at $176 delivered from a US seller, under the $190–260 band. There are at least 21 listed, US sellers ask $170–256 delivered and Japan dealers mostly $198–275, and codes with JP in them are the Japanese layout, with a short space bar, extra keys and Japanese legends. The R2's cable is fixed, so look along it in the photos for kinks, cuts or tape, and ask for a typing test and a video of the space bar, Enter and Shifts going down without a rattle. Skip the zero-feedback listing at $170, whose photo shows a box marked TKL under a full-size title, and the $600 R2A-US5-BK at about 2.6 times the $228 median.
